Division Street, Manhattan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Division Street is a one way street in the Lower East Side of the New York City borough of Manhattan. It runs in a northeasterly direction with westbound traffic and passes beneath the Manhattan Bridge. It currently begins at Canal Street and Ludlow Street, ending at Bowery.
It is mostly residential, occupied by mostly Chinese immigrants. At the northwest corner of Division Street and Allen Street, across from the Mobil station, the headquarters of the Manhattan Railway Corporation still stands. It is currently used as an office space for Chinese produce traders and the space below is used for trading. The Second Avenue Elevated Railroad used to run along Division Street from Bowery to Allen Street, before turning onto Allen Street. The space under the bridge is used for a mall called the East Broadway Mall. There is a carpark at Market Street and next to it is the PS 124 Yung Wing Elementary School. The school is part of a residential complex called Confucius Plaza. At this point, the street widens. Buses to Flushing and casinos park on the right side. There use to be a greenmarket until it moved to the space under the Manhattan Bridge on Forsyth Street between Canal Street and Division Street. Before Bowery, there is a statue of Confucius and here most of the traffic gets diverted to Bowery and also Manhattan Bridge.
