The Division Intervention Forces or 1st Armoured Division (German: Division Eingreifkräfte/1. Panzerdivision) is an armoured Division of the German Army. Its HQ is based at Hannover. As a result of the current Transformation of the Bundeswehr it is getting reorganised to be the main unit of the new formed German Intervention Force (Eingreifkräfte) which will have 35.000 men in total. It's equipped and trained for high intensity fighting with mostly military organised enemies and for being able to act in "peace-forcing missions". Most German Troops for EU-Battlegroups and NRF will come from this unit.

[edit] History
The Division was formed on the same day as the Bundeswehr on July 1 of 1956 as 1. Grenadierdvision. From the day of its formation the division kept growing until 1959 when it had a strength of 11.573 men. In 1981 it was renamed 1.Panzerdvision.
[edit] Division Today
For the Transformation of the Bundeswehr the Unit will receive the second name Division Eingreifkräfte. Both names will then be official appellations. As mentioned the Division Intervention Forces will provide most of the German contingents of multinational rapid reaction forces. It's equipped and trained for high intensity fighting with mostly military organised enemies and for being able to act in "peace-forcing missions".
