[edit] Edit summaries

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you.  Glen  10:41, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Blagoj Nacoski 2006.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Blagoj Nacoski 2006.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 00:05, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Advice

Hi, thanks for your message. Okay, I'll try to help you, and sorry for the harsh response at first. As for CD covers, the relevant policies are at Wikipedia:Fair use. My understanding is that they can only be used in articles whose actual subject is the recording in question, but I'm not an expert on these image policy things. In any case, it will be crucial that you provide a correct source and correct licensing information. You need to understand the difference between "free content" (licenses like the GFDL) and "fair use" (things that are really copyrighted/unfree, but can be used by way of exception). If you want to claim "fair use", you need to state that on the image page. Never claim something is free (GFDL) if in reality it isn't.

As for your text about the opera singer, I cut it back because I felt it was too enthusiastic, too much advertising, not "encyclopedic" in tone. Remember articles must be written in a neutral, sober way. Also, if you want to expand it with more material again, it will be necessary that it's sourced - for instance, try to find citations from reputed music journals giving critical appraisals of his performances, something like that. If you want to show that he's more than just a reasonably talented average-Joe musician who has made a few opera performances, you need some evidence.

Hope this helps, Fut.Perf. 23:11, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I'm not quite sure yet about the new content - it still seems a bit exaggerated to me. And I also notice you re-uploaded the image as Image:Blagoj Nacoski.jpg, after Image:Blagoj Nacoski 2006.jpg was tagged as unsourced. Please, please don't do that. Contact your friend who owns the copyright of that photograph, get them to write an e-mail confirming they release it under GFDL, and forward that to me or to permissions (at) wikimedia.org. Otherwise the image will be deleted. And please don't make such uploads again without a source or I'll have to re-block you. Fut.Perf. 14:11, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I can see the title role in Salzburg sounds like a notable achievement. But that's exactly why I would want to weed out all the minor stuff - we want the real important facts to stick out and not be covered by the unimportant things. The shorter the article, the more impressive. I'll have a look again later when I have more time. But please do something about those image sources. Fut.Perf. 14:30, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

About that naming issue - well, yes, it's a huge dispute that keeps coming up in all sort of articles. The current consensus (or maybe better: balance point between the conflicting opinions) is that "Macedonia" alone is ambiguous between your country and the region in Greece, and that it is therefore better to use a disambiguating addition, either "Republic of Macedonia" or "Greek Macedonia" etc., wherever necessary. I think it will be better to stick with that and not touch the dispute if possible - if it was up to the Greeks, they'd be making you call the country FYROM all the time. - By the way, I hadn't noticed you had already edited the name of the competition before I made my edit, otherwise I wouldn't probably have changed it. Fut.Perf. 21:21, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

Hm, I guess you can just upload it, choose "GFDL" as the applicable license, and then say on the image page: "Source: Mrs Blacoski, private possession, provided to Wikipedia under GFDL." And then just hope that everybody will believe it. I don't know what you'd do if anybody challenged you to prove you have the license. The ideal thing would be if you could get her to give you a written licensing statement (e-mail: "I hereby release the image so-and-so for publication in Wikipedia under the conditions of the GFDL".) and send that e-mail to permissions (at) wikimedia.org.

--Misos 18:50, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Изгледа пак каснам, Хектор и Алдукс ги ревертирале промените на ZoguShqiptar700. --Misos 02:31, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Il sogno di Scipione.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Il sogno di Scipione.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] Image:RainbowPartyLogoGreek.jpg

Hello Ditirambo, an automated process has found an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, such as fair use. The image (Image:RainbowPartyLogoGreek.jpg) was found at the following location: User:Ditirambo. This image or media will be removed per statement number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media will be replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. The image that was replaced will not be automatically deleted, but it could be deleted at a later date. Articles using the same image should not be affected by my edits. I ask you to please not readd the image to your userpage and could consider finding a replacement image licensed under either the Creative Commons or GFDL license or released to the public domain. Thanks for your attention and cooperation. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 06:16, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
