Diskoton
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Diskoton was a major record label based in Sarajevo, Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the former Yugoslavia. It should not be confused with another former Yugoslav record company with a similar name called Diskos.
Diskoton released numerous records of many former Yugoslav artists including certain albums of the cult band Bijelo Dugme, Zabranjeno Pušenje, the heavy metal group Divlje Jagode, the 1960s rock bands Indexi and Ambasadori and the solo artist Sead Memić-Vajta, who represented SFR Yugoslavia in the Eurovision Song Contest 1981. One of the best known Diskoton releases was also the soundtrack album for the film Dom za vešanje (translated as Time of the Gypsies). The label also released records by foreign artists, such as Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Commodores, Roy Harper and Diana Ross for the former Yugoslav market.
Its competitors were the bigger record companies such as Jugoton from Zagreb, the largest in former Yugoslavia, and PGP-RTB from Belgrade.
With the outbreak of the War in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the company ceased to exist.
An unrelated online shop currently operates with the same name.
