In November 19, 1493 Christopher Columbus set foot on an island in the Caribbean Sea which he dubbed San Juan Bautista. The island was later renamed to Puerto Rico (or "rich port" in English). The island was already inhabited by the Taíno people. Puerto Rico was then relieved of Spanish control in 1898 by the United States and became a US territory.
The Discovery of Puerto Rico is an official public holiday celebrated in Puerto Rico every year.
