Discovery Peak is a mountain located in the Diablo Range of California. The mountain rises to an elevation of about 3,840 ft (1,170 m), which is the highpoint of Alameda County.[1] The peak is unnamed on topographic maps and the summit is also called Valpe Ridge-Rose Flat due to its location near Rose Flat to the west.[2] The mountain is high enough to receive snowfall during the winter.[3] Despite the fact that the peak is on private property, the gate is usually open and chances of encountering the landowner are slim. However, the view from the summit is limited by trees and nearby ridgelines.[4]

[edit] History

Discovery Peak was named in 1991 after it was "discovered" by highpointer Dinesh Desai while studying a topo map.[5] Field work by Gordon MacLeod and others supports the conclusion that Discovery Peak is the highest point in Alameda County.[6] This is in conflict with numerous official county documents that list nearby Rose Peak as the highest point.[7]
