[edit] Origin and recording
Pearl Jam attempted a funk style with "Dirty Frank" as a tribute to the Red Hot Chili Peppers as the song was written while Pearl Jam was on tour with them.[1]
The song was one of the first to be recorded with drummer Dave Abbruzzese. The same sessions also produced "State of Love and Trust", "Breath", and the re-recorded version of "Even Flow".
"Dirty Frank" later appeared on the 2003 Pearl Jam B-sides and rarities compilation Lost Dogs. The version on Lost Dogs is slightly longer and quite a few of the vocals have been removed. Mike McCready also added a guitar on this version.
[edit] Reception
In Allmusic's review of the "Even Flow" single, it was stated that "Dirty Frank" "is much looser and funkier than the material found on their first album. Although a little overlong, this signaled the direction they were heading in, and is important to fans for that reason."[2]
[edit] Lyrical meaning
The lyrics were written by Eddie Vedder about a fictitious serial killer bus driver. The character in the song was inspired by the behavior of their actual bus driver at the time.[3] The lyrics also draw upon the case of the American cannibal serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.
The song references Isaac Hayes' theme from the movie Shaft with the lyrics "Why that dirty Frank was a bad mother...Shut your mouth!/Hey man, I'm just talking about Dirty Frank." The song also references the Red Hot Chili Peppers song "Freaky Styley" with the line "I cook 'em just to see the look on their face"; in "Freaky Styley" the line is "I fuck 'em just to see the look on their face".
[edit] Live performances
The song was premiered live at the band's March 9, 1992 concert in Berlin, Germany.[4] After the band's April 12, 1994 concert in Boston, Massachusetts, the song was not performed for twelve years. The song made a return appearance at the band's July 22, 2006 concert in George, Washington.[4] A live performance of "Dirty Frank" can be found on the Live at the Gorge 05/06 box set.
