Dirk Hanekom

Dirk Jacobus Hanekom (b.1956) is a retired colonel from Tempe military base in Bloemfontein and a right-wing extremist who belongs to the Boeremag, an irredentist organization. Hanekom was one of the leaders of the plot to overthrow the South African government with the aim of declaring a Boer republic in 2002. He was arrested on the 20 September 2002 on a farm in the Memel district in the eastern Free State. Hanekom was charged with treason and brought to trial with 21 other alleged members of the right-wing Boeremag at the Pretoria High Court on the 19 May 2003.
