Dirigo High School

Dirigo High School is a high school located in Dixfield, Maine, in the United States as part of Maine School Administrative District 21. Dirigo High School serves the towns of Dixfield, Canton, Carthage and Peru. It is classified as a secondary class "C" school. The school is in the Mountain Valley Conference or MVC.
Dirigo High School was built in 1948. The second floor was added in 1951. The gym was added in 1967. The science wing was added in 1974. The building was renovated and expanded in 1998.

SAD 21 envisions itself as a collaborative learning community continually striving for excellence by providing a curriculum that is coordinated, diverse and adaptive and by providing its students with skills, knowledge and aspirations to make productive choices.
To achieve its vision, the district will
- deliver a diverse curriculum to meet the learning styles and intelligences of all students.
- Provide challenging instruction and assessment so that students not only master basic skills, but also achieve academic standards as set out in the State of Maine Learning Results.
- Maintain a safe, nurturing environment where all are treated with dignity and respect so that each student may become a healthy, self-confident, tolerant citizen.
- Promote enthusiasm and curiosity for lifelong learning and teach the methodology to gather, interpret, analyze, and integrate new ideas and skills.
- Teach a knowledge of human civilization and culture so that students may understand and accept their roles as global stewards and citizens.

The mission of Dirigo High School is to be a safe and respectful community with a rigorous and diverse curriculum that offers opportunities for students to develop skills, gain knowledge and aspire to make life long productive choices. To influence this mission we use the 4 cs that instruct students of the mission statement. They are
k(c)nowledge- knowledge is more than the mass of interrelation that are compile in their time at Dirigo High School. knowledge is the foundation of learning, for it takes the individual from one level to understand a higher one.
Choices - the choices we make not only define our students as us individuals, but the denture a collective society. there for at dirigo high school we strive to prepare students to make choices that will positively impact students lives and our school community
Community - education void to community is in many ways void of purpose. the point of education is to build community and the point of community at DHS
Curriculum - curriculum is the marrow of education to DHS. It is at the heart of what it is taught.

The philosophy of Dirigo High School is an extension of MSAD # 21’s vision statement. The high school years are a time of transition between youth and adulthood in which students must acquire knowledge and skills to develop independence, maturity, and a sense of responsibility. The challenge at Dirigo High School is to facilitate this transition by providing program relevant to the broad range of student needs, interests, abilities, and aspirations, and to maintain a school environment that supports this diversity.

On special occasions the students at Dirigo High wear their class colors. The current class colors are: freshmen-red, Sophomores -black, Juniors- blue. and Seniors-white.

Students at Dirigo High School must complete a portfolio in order to graduate. This portfolio is called the Cougar Paw credit. Students receive a quarter credit each year for Cougar Paw. Your portfolio must show evidence that you've met Maine's Learning Results. Also, you must include personal pages, proof of community service, and evidence of activities of each year at DHS.

Dirigo Lady Cougars Basketball History
The Dirigo Lady Cougars' basketball team has had over a decade of success. Since 1995 the Lady Cougars had 11 straight Mountain Valley Conference (MVC) titles for a total of 12, 11 straight Western Maine titles for a total of 14, and 6 out of 13 State Championships. Dirigo has been a dominant high school basketball team in the past decade. The Lady Cougars rely on a great defense, and love to trap opposing teams and run a fast-break offense. The Lady Cougars have been gifted with several players to make the 1,000-point club.

Cheering is a winter sport. Dirigo has won an athletic award in 1998 and 2002. In 2007, DHS won regionals, and won a Western Maine Class C championship.
[edit] Soccer
The Dirigo high school soccer team has accomplished many things in the past five years. They have made it to the Maine state semifinals twice. In the past five years they have also made it to the Western Maine Finals, but they lost to Sacopee Valley 2-1. In 2007, they made it to the semi final round with a record of 11-2-1 in the regular season and an overall record was 12-3-1. This team was the third team in Dirigo history to make it this far into the playoffs.

Retired jerseys from Dirigo High School
There are a few ways an athlete can retire his/her jersey at Dirigo High School. The most common being the 1000 point club for basketball. Dirigo has retired several Jerseys for the girls' basketball team, and two for the boys' basketball team.
One other Jersey has been retired in Dirigo history, that one belonging to a Field Hockey Player. Her name, Danielle (Dani) Tompkins. Dani did not have the honor of retiring her jersey for making 1000 goals, she did so by saving 1000 goals. No other goalie in New England has ever saved 1000 goals. This makes our school the first to ever have a goalie with 1000 saves. She has a total of 1169.

In the 2007 Dirigo boys tennis went undefeated 12 and 0, during the regular season. They have accomplished this two straight seasons. They lost in the first game of the playoffs in 2006 and lost in the Western Maine Finals in 2007.
A great deal of credit goes to two players who started their freshmen year. Mike Holmquist played all four years and was chosen player of the year during the 2007 season, he lost only one match, which was the beginning of the season to a player that played year round, but by the end of the season during the playoff's he beat that player.
Nathan Archibald and Kaile Underwood were the other two single players. They never lost a match during the regular season. Enrico Ross played singles in many of the matches as well. He also never lost a regular season match.
Colby Knapp played some single match, all of which he won. He also won all of the double matches he played, during the regular season. Steve Webster played both second and first doubles. He eventually worked his way up to playing all first doubles with Colby by the end of the year.
The 2007 season is by far the best boy's tennis season Dirigo has ever had. Seniors Mike Holmquist, Nate Archibald, Steve Webtser, Josh Saphier and Matt Smith graduated in 2007 and will be missed. Dirigo fans should see some more great tennis from the boy's tennis team during the 2008 season. Returning players will be Kaile Underwood, Enrico Ross and Colby Knapp, who should fill in the three single positions. Kyle Hutchinson, Austin Hamann, Peter Neverette, Larry Briggs, Mike Noyes, Brandon Jonatitas and Dakota Turnbull should be back to challenge the single players and compete for two doubles' position's

Aaron Williamson - Portrayed in the movie Black Hawk Down. He was a soldier involved in the rescue mission. He was awarded Student of the Month while at DHS.
