A Direct Carbon Fuel Cell (DCFC) is a fuel cell that uses a carbonaceous material as a fuel. It can be carbon, coke (from the petroleum industry), char or an organic source of carbon. Two types of DCFC exist:the first one is based on the Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) concept and the second one is based on the Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) concept.
The total reaction of the cell is C + O2 = CO2.
The efficiency of this fuel cell is about 80%, i.e. twice more efficient than a conventional combustion reaction.
