Hurtado, known as "The Oriental Kid", began his professional career in 1994 and in 1997 challenged WBC welterweight title holder Pernell Whitaker. He was stunningly TKO'd in the 11th round by the light punching Whitaker in a bout in which Hurtado was surprisingly leading on all three judges' cards. In 1998 he got a shot at WBC light welterweight title holder Kostya Tszyu. The fight featured a dramatic 1st round, with Hurtado going down, and Tszyu down twice in the round. Tszyu came on and won the fight via TKO in the 5th round. In 2002 he captured the WBA light welterweight title with a KO win over Randall Bailey. He lost the belt in his first defense to Vivian Harris via 2nd round TKO. He retired in 2004.

He came out of retirement in December of 2007 winning a unanimous desicion over Rafael Chiruta of Romania.

He's scheduled to fight Marcos Munoz on June 6th 2008 in Galicia, Spain.
