Diocese of Saint-Claude

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The French Catholic diocese of Saint-Claude corresponds in territory to the department of Jura. It was created in 1742[1], as a smaller area, mostly consisting of some parishes previously controlled by the Abbey of Sainte-Claude[2]. Under the Concordat of 1802 it was included in the Archdiocese of Besançon; in 1822 it was again independent.

It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Besançon, having in the past been a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Lyon. Its see is Saint-Claude Cathedral.
