I'm Matt Martyniuk, an "armchair paleontologist" interested mainly in vertebrate paleontology, mainly early birds and bird-like theropods. I'm also interested in pterosaurs, especially the azhdarchids. I try to follow the latest developments in these areas, so I can better nitpick new and old image submissions. I'm very interested in finding out how these animals would have looked and behaved in life, and I helped create the Wikiproject Dinosaurs image review to make sure the images displayed in Wikipedia paleo articles are just as accurate as the accompanying text (unlike the vast majority of popular dinosaur books and TV documentaries!). I'm also interested in scientific classification and helped standardize the taxoboxes in dinosaur articles loosely according to Benton's 2004 vertebrate taxonomy.

Linnaean nomenclature is stable enough to say what we know, flexible enough to accommodate what we learn; independent of specific theory, yet reflective of known empirical data; compatible with phylogenetic theory, but not a slave to it; particular enough for precise communication, general enough to reflect refuted hypotheses." --Quentin D. Wheeler, 2001 [1]

[edit] Wikiproject Dinosaurs

For now, I want to cite two articles that are triumphs of this project.

  • Wikipedia:WikiProject Dinosaurs/missing Since the project started, members have created articles for nearly every single dinosaur genus. That's no small feat!
  • Palaeosaurus - This is what happens when Wikipedians who know their stuff collaborate. A detailed and well-written history of one of the most confusing taxonomic situations I've ever heard of.

[edit] Cheers

I'm flattered to get awards, but really, the people giving them to me usually do a lot more for the cause than I have in my short time here. They're the real heroes, so good on you guys!
