Dinosaurs Before Dark is the first book of the Magic Tree House series, by Mary Pope Osbourne.

[edit] Story

Two children, the often timid 8-year-old bookworm Jack and his imaginative and energetic 7-year-old sister Annie, who live in Frog Creek, Pennsylvania went into the Frog Creek woods. As they were walking in the woods, they saw a treehouse inside the tallest oak. They climbed into the treehouse. Inside the treehouse there were many books. Jack and Annie looked at the books.

As they were looking, Jack found a book about dinosaurs. He pointed to the cover and wished he could go there. The treehouse began to spin and Jack and Annie were wondering what was going on.

When it stopped spinning Jack and Annie looked outside the window. They were in the time of the dinosaurs. Most of the dinosaurs were nice. Jack and Annie saw a tyrannosaurus rex. They ran and ran and ran, but then the pteranodon saves them by letting them go on his back. The pteranodon flew them to the magic treehouse and Jack and Annie went inside the treehouse and they point to a Frog Creek book and wished they could go home.

Of later importance to the plot, the children find a medallion with a letter "M" on it. It later leads them to the owner of the treehouse and the books within.
