Dino Crisis 2 is an action game and sequel to Dino Crisis. The game was developed and published by Capcom and was released for the PlayStation on September 13, 2000. The game was followed by another sequel, Dino Crisis 3 which was released in 2003 for the Xbox.
Regina is now on another mission, involving a facility located close to a town called Edward City. A major anomaly has caused the whole island to be transported back in time to the era of the dinosaurs, along with all the human inhabitants. Regina has new ally, Dylan, who has a strange connection to the events on the island. The player's control switches between Regina and Dylan at specific points in the game.

[edit] Gameplay
In a departure from the survival horror theme of the original game, Dino Crisis 2 is more shoot 'em up oriented. The player character always runs, eliminating the need for a run button. A secondary weapon (machete, stun gun, firewall, chain mine and shock gun) can also be carried, and more weapons have been added (hand gun, shotgun, solid cannon, flame launcher, sub-machine gun, heavy machine gun, anti-tank rifle, missile pod, rocket launcher, needle gun, aqua grenade). Besides changes to the gameplay, the game also introduces new species of dinosaurs and lizards, such as the Triceratops, Giganotosaurus, Allosaurus, Mosasaurus, Plesiosaurus, Inostrancevia and Oviraptor.
The game also adds the "extinction points" and "combo points" which allows the player to buy ammo (which is no longer scarce) and weapons, as well as to unlock hidden features when the game is finished. Weapons can be bought at glowing computer terminals which are scattered throughout the island.
Some of the features include Extra Crisis mode, which has two minigames: "Dino Colosseum" where the player faces a procession of dinosaurs in turn, (similar to the Survival mode seen in many fighting games) and "Dino Duel", a battle mode where players were able to play as certain dinosaurs, much like the video game Warpath: Jurassic Park. The player must collect all 11 Dino Files to access bonus levels after completing the regular game once.
[edit] Characters
- Dylan Morton (voiced by Gabriel Hogan) — T.R.A.T. commando who accompanies Regina to the Third Energy site. Though lacking in agility, he is skillful with firearms and can wield the most powerful weapons. He is equipped with a machete which can cut through dense vines that entangle doors. In the story, Dylan comes off as a hothead whom Regina helps out of scrapes a time or two. The duo instantly becomes partners when it seems they are the last agents to have survived the attack on the camp. It's revealed later that the time the island is located in is actually the future with the mysterious girl, Paula, being revealed to being Dylan's future daughter. In the end, he chooses to stay behind with Paula as the complex begins exploding, making Regina promise to build a perfect gate and save them at the last moment. Images shown after completion of the game shows Regina kept her word.
- Regina (voiced by Stephanie Morgenstern) — A returning character from the original Dino Crisis. Member of the Secret Operation Raid Team (S.O.R.T.) that reports directly to the government. She is a survivor of a previous mission to capture Dr. Kirk, which took place a year before (the events of the first Dino Crisis). Her agility and cool judgment are her greatest strengths. As such, she is superior at running, evasion and ascending ladders. She is equipped with an electroshock prod which is intended to fight off dinosaurs, but is an ineffective weapon. The prod can also short out doors which are controlled via electricity, an unintended but useful function. In the story her main goal is to attain the data on Third Energy, which she successfully completes at the game's end.
- David Fork (voiced by Eric Hempsall) — One of Dylan's team members who always appears cheerful and raises the morale of the team. He wears a cowboy hat. Though his fighting style is not as strong as Dylan's, his friendliness is his greatest asset. In the game, he leaves the mark of a cowboy hat to lead Dylan and Regina along the right path and then rescues them from a pack of velociraptors using a helicopter. After a mini-game in which Dylan provides cover fire while David opens the gate to the canal, he gets eaten by an Allosaurus. David is a non-playable character.
- Paula (voiced by Lisa Yamanaka) — One of the mysterious hostile survivors of Edward City. She holds a significant part in the story and appears randomly throughout. In the game, Paula makes her first appearance after attacking Regina. Regina apprehends her, though later Paula escapes. Paula then helps Dylan find his way to the complex in a mini-game in which the player has to protect her from Oviraptors. A holographic message projection of a future Dylan Morton reveals they are currently in the future, with Paula's mother having been killed by the dinosaurs while she herself was severely injured. To save her life, Paula was put in a life-support chamber originally designed for the stasis of the dinosaurs, which healed her but made her lose the ability to speak. She learns how to say the words "Home" and "Papa", which she frequently refers to Dylan. In the end she becomes trapped by falling debris, though images obtained from completing the game features that Regina kept her word and rescued them at the last moment.

[edit] Story
The game takes place about a year after the previous game does. Edward City, a town devoted entirely to research, has disappeared, and is sent back to a prehistoric jungle. A search and rescue team called T.R.A.T. has been sent to the jungle to find out what happened to Edward City, it's inhabitants, the research facilities, and try to recover any Third Energy research documents. Regina, protagonist of the previous game, has been sent along due to her experience in dealing with dinosaurs. Once on the island, the team is attacked by Velociraptors, killing everyone except Regina and two members of the team, Dylan and David.
As the game progresses, they run into hostile "Children" that are supposedly from the future. After they capture one of the children, they discover what happened to Edward City. The scientists in the town had been experimenting with time travel using Third Energy. While attempting to transport dinosaurs into the future, there was an overload in the machinery, sending the scientists into the past, the city into the future, and the dinosaurs into the present.
David is killed by an Allosaurus while helping Regina and Dylan near the end of the game, and Dylan stays behind in the past with Paula at the end of the game, leaving Regina the only survivor of the mission.

[edit] Reception
Dino Crisis 2 received a positive response from critics with an average score of 81.5% at Game Rankings based on 24 outlets.[1] Internet game reviewing site Gamespot gave it a 9.2 (out of 10) saying it "avoids the stereotypes of the genre"[2] and IGN gave it a 9.3 saying "the fast-moving action is incorporated into the Dino Crisis 2 almost flawlessly and it sends the series into a great, new shooter/action direction".[3] The Official Playstation Magazine awarded it 4.5 stars out of 5. However the game has been criticised for its fixed camera with no movement in the game except for the cut-scenes making it frustrating at times with the dinosaurs not in player view.[citation needed]
