Dinny Barry-Murphy (1904-1973) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling at various times with his local clubs Cloughduv, Éire Óg and St. Finbarr’s. Barry-Murphy was also a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 1926 until 1935.

Dinny Barry-Murphy was born in Cloughduv, County Cork in 1904. He grew up on the family farm and was educated locally. He later attended St. Finbarr’s College, Farranferris in Cork where he played on the college hurling team. Barry-Murphy later worked with the Cork Farmers Union.

Barry-Murphy began his hurling career in 1922 as a membe rof his local Cloughduv team. He had little success here and joined the Éire Óg club in 1928. That year Barry-Murphy won his sole senior county title. By 1932 he had moved clubs again, this time becoming a member of the famous St. Finbarr’s. He remained here until 1935 but had little success. Barry-Murphy finished off his club hurling career with his native Cloughduv club once again. He won county junior and intermediate titles with the club in 1940 and 1941 respectively.

Barry-Murphy first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Cork junior team in the early 1920s. He won both Munster and All-Ireland honours in thius grade in 1925. Barry-Murphy joined the senior hurling team in 1926 and won his first senior Munster medal following a victory over Tipperary in the second replay of the provincial final. Cork later played Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final on a snow-covered Croke Park. Cork ended up as the victors on a score lien of 4-6 to 2-0 giving Barry-Murphy his first senior All-Ireland medal.
In 1927 Barry-Murphy won his second Munster title following a victory over Clare. He later lined out in his second All-Ireland final, however, Cork were defeated by a Dublin team that contained nine Gardai. Cork continued their provincial dominance in 1928 with Barry-Murphy collecting a third Munster title following a victory over Clare following a replay. ‘The Rebels’ later played Galway in the All-Ireland final, however, Cork trounced Galway by 6-12 to 1-0 with Barry-Murphy winning his second All-Ireland medal. In 1929 he won a fourth consecutive Munster medal following a victory over near-rivals Waterford. Barry-Murphy later lined out in his fourth All-Ireland final in-a-row with Galway providing the opposition once again. Cork scored a goal after just 25 seconds to start another rout with Barry-Murphy collecting his third All-Ireland medal. Cork surrendered their provincial crown in 1930, however, the team bounced back in 1931 with Barry-Murphy colelcting his fifth Munster medal. Cork later faced Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final, however, the game ended in a draw. The replay was even more exciting than the first game, however, it ended in a draw once again. At the third time of asking Cork defeated Kilkenny by 5-8 to 3-4 and Barry-Murphy collected his fourth All-Ireland medal.
Barry-Murphy continued to play with Cork until 1935.

Barry-Murphy also line dout with Munster and won Railway Cup titles in 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931 and 1934.
