Dinko Šakić (b. September 8, 1921, Studenci, Croatia) is a Croat who was one of the leaders of the army of the fascist Independent State of Croatia (NDH) during World War II.
He commanded the Jasenovac concentration camp at one time. After the defeat of the Axis forces, he emigrated to Argentina.
Having been tracked down by the Nazi hunter Efraim Zuroff, the District Attorney in Zagreb brought charges against Šakić for war crimes during WWII when he was the chief of the Jasenovac concentration camp, on 20 April 1998.
According to the hearings and indictment, Sakic is either charged or suspected of the following crimes:
- Participation in the inquiries of the mobile-martial-court during which he took part of torture, alike the burning of Hadzija with a blowtorch addressed by Sakic as "V-1"' which was "a success". following that inquisition, Sakic ordered the hanging of 20 men, including Dr. Mile Boskovic, all found guilty of attempted uprising. Sakic said the camp is inescapable.
- Issuing orders to the hanging of Nisim Kaper and Albert Izrael for tailing cots without request and for stealing a corn cub respectivly. they were ordered out of formation and shot by Sakic. the bodies were hung abd Nisim's body was shaken' causing fractures and bloody gashes. the bodies remained dangling for several days.
- The capture of the runaway Ivan Wollner and the subsequental reprisal against Jewish internees, with the selection of 25 of them to be interned in the "Zvonara"(Bell warehouse) to experience starvation and torture prior to their slaughter. Additionally, two Jews, Leon Perare and Abraham Montilijo, who were laughing due to an unexplained cause, were shot in the back of the neck by Sakic.
- Responsibility for the actions of all Ustase under his command, resulting in some 4,000 deaths.
He was extradited from Argentina, judged and found guilty by a Croatian court and sentenced to 20 years in prison, which is the maximum penalty under Croatian law at the time.
His wife, Nada, is the sister of Maks Luburić, making Luburić Dinko Šakić's brother-in-law.
