"Dimension" is the third single released from Wolfmother's self-titled album. It was released on Monday, April 17, 2006 and is backed by "The Earth's Rotation Around the Sun", which can also be found on the Dimensions EP. It is featured in the video games Flatout 2 and Rugby 06. It was also featured as the theme song to Dane Cook's Tourgasm and was in the soundtrack for the 2006 film School for Scoundrels, as well as being featured in the medical drama House. It was in Toy Machine's "Suffer the Joy" video in Johnny Layton's part. It was also featured as the theme song of Ring of Honor's second PPV, Driven.
[edit] Overview
The song deals with and discusses time travel, a common theme in Wolfmother frontman Andrew Stockdale's lyrical repertoire. The lyric "I fell down in the desert baby/I had nothing but a piece of paper" is often thought to be a reference to the Egyptian pyramids, the subject of another Wolfmother song, Pyramid. In the chorus, Stockdale blatantly refers to Jimi Hendrix in "Purple haze's in the sky/See the angel's wicked eye/All these things we must try/Until we see the reasons why," all of which are either names or lyrical quotes by Hendrix. It was recorded in the Palm Desert, California at the same site where British psychedelic/prog band Pink Floyd rehearsed The Wall.
Another interpretation of the song is on Stockdale's homelessness prior to starting Wolfmother ("I'll crash on the hills tonight/I got a feeling everything is gonna be all right").
In addition to Dimension, the two-sided EP/double song EP features the rare track "The Earth's Rotation Around the Sun" an instrumental song based around Stockdale's guitar work; a "psychedelic, freak-out jam" (All Music Guide).
