Digsy Deary

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Digsy Deary is a Liverpudlian born musician and singer/songwriter. Famous for his own bands, Cook da Books, Smaller and more recently The Sums, he has also been immortalised in song via Noel Gallagher and the Oasis song "Digsy's Dinner" taken from their debut album Definitely Maybe.

The lyric to the song is a nonsense rhyme about the singer's desire to take someone back their house for lasagne and strawberries and cream. The song originated from an incident in a Manchester club when Oasis members Noel and Guigsy performed with Digsy. Noel was on drums and Guigsy on bass whilst Digsy sang a random lyric made up on the spot which went: "Guess what I had for my tea?/Guess what I had for my tea?/It was lasagne!/It was lasagne!"

Digsy claims to hate the song, but adds "it has bought [him] many a drink". In retaliation, he wrote a song called "Noel's Nose". Digsy talks in full about this on the Definitely Maybe DVD.

Liam Gallagher, Oasis' vocalist, now refuses to perform the song claiming "I will sing any song anywhere. Unless it's 'Digsy's Dinner'".

Digsy is also mentioned in the title track of the Oasis album Be Here Now in the lyric "Your shit jokes remind me of Digsy's."

On Digsy's official myspace, his "about me" claims "Digsy is a Liverpool based singer songwriter with 'The Sums', he hates lasange and sometimes tells decent jokes." This is coming back at the lyrics from Digsy's dinner and Be Here Now.

Digsy these days tours as a solo artist and also in his current band The Sums playing all over the UK and Ireland. He tours with Definitely Maybe producer Mark Coyle amongst a host of acts from both UK and Ireland and has been seen frequenting the Dublin pubs with indie singer/songwriter Rob Smith.

Digsy was lead singer with 90's indie legends 'Smaller' who had a successful debut album 'Badly Badly' from this came some top 10 indie chart hits, which included 'Wasted & Is (feat Noel Gallagher), God i hate this town & Stray dogs and binbags. The band where regular fixtures on Oasis tour's, both Smaller and Oasis's friendship has been well documented over the years. Unfortunately the bands record label ran into fiancial troubles and went bust, leaving the band stranded and their 2nd album to be shelved. The band continued with a line up change, introducing Chris Mullin and Lee Watson.

Digsy is currently recording new material with his band 'The Sums' for future release. The new line up includes long time friends and ex smaller members Chris Mullin (bass) and Lee Watson (guitar), with Brendan Moore (drums). The band have earned themselves a great reputation up and down the country with some key players in the music industry, and they never fail to deliver. The band are still touring around the country, and Digsy and Chris Mullin have also been playing a number of special acoustic sets up and down the country and a number of live radio sessions.

They have just recorded a cover version of The Beatles 'Paperback Writer' which is featured on an album released by EMI,4th February 2008 titled 'Liverpool - The Number Ones'. The number one project has seen bands such as The Farm, Elvis Costello, China Crisis, Frankie goes to hollywood, Atomic kitten, Shack, Amsterdam, The real people, Eton road, Sonia, and many more, all coming together to celebrate Liverpools chart topping achievements by recording a covers and collaborations album, all proceeds are going to 6 Liverpool charitys and all bands/artist done this for free. The album is available in all music stores or download from itunes from February 4th 2008. The Sums are also in the prgress of releasing there own material for download via itunes.

Bass player 'Chris Mullin' however has wrote a song with the one and only ex member of 'The Beatles' - Sir Paul McCartney and is in the progress of getting clearance from Macca's publishing company, the song is titled 'Myself fooling me' and came about after a jam session in LIPA (Liverpool), McCartney loved the tune and contributed his own section to the song and also suggested the title' Myself fooling me'. The song will not be released or recorded with 'The Sums', as it will be a side/solo project for Chris Mullin who will play guitar/vocals on the track.
