Digambar Kamat

Digambar Kamat (दिगंबर कामत) is a politician from Goa, and since June 2007 he is the Chief Minister of Goa. Digambar is a long-term senior politician in the state, having headed up several ministries and has performed exceptionally well. He left the Indian National Congress in 1994 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party when he was not given the INC ticket. In 2005, he left the BJP-led government in the state and returned to the Congress . He has always represented the urban assembly constituency of Margao. When the Congress had the numbers to form a government after the 2007 elections, his name was unanimosly selected by the central leaders and seconded by the local leaders as they wanted a man with a clean image.He created a record when he was the longest serving power minister in the country.He was also responsible for turning the power department to a profit making organization.The power department was suffering with heavy losses when he took charge.On July 25th, 2007, Kamat's government fell into crisis, as it appeared to not have a majority after resignations and alliance break-up's.
