Dictionary.co.uk was launched in 2001 as an English language dictionary based around definitions from Cambridge University Press.
In 2007 it was re-launched to include not only a standard English language dictionary but also The People’s Dictionary – a way of tracking the changing face of the English language.
Slang, technical words, abbreviations and many other forms of words are appearing or changing definition all the time, and it is the aim of The People’s Dictionary to track as much of that change as possible. In addition to a definition and an example the site wants to see links to sites where the word is used in context. This will give a date for usage as well as proof – both invaluable in tracking a words use.
Anyone can enter a word into The People’s Dictionary – and over time as other users add links to the word being used in context it will create evidence towards a words acceptance in reference dictionaries.
