Diary of an Oxygen Thief

Diary of an Oxygen Thief is a novel written anonymously and was published in Amsterdam by NLVI.
Summary
The semi-autobiographical novel centers on the sobriety, or lack thereof, of an alcoholic ad-man freelancing in London. The narrative starts around the time of the mid nineties, though the book makes no real attempt to include dates and jumps around various aspects of the man's life in a stream of consciousness similar to Phillip Roth's Portnoy's Complaint, Hunter S. Thompson, or Jack Kerouac. Anon (the author) couches his prose in a uniquely Irish and personal humor which flouts one's notions of politeness, right and wrong, and the need for justification. Anon is confronted externally by the absurdity of corporate America, culture shock, and the conflict of moving from the lower to upper-middle class. Internally he grapples with paranoia, addiction, and a legacy of pain. This creates the engine that drives him to find a love that will absolve him of the injustices of his past. The titular Oxygen Thief refers to the low self-esteem of the narrator who, because of his sense of self-loathing, seems to go through life unworthy of the very air he breathes.
