Diaphone

The diaphone was invented in Canada and used for producing air fog signals. In the early 1900’s the diaphone was introduced in the United States. A diaphone is a fog signal operated by compressed air that makes signals consisting of two tones, one high and one lone characterized by the “grunt” that ends each note.

These signals served as an alarm of some form for lighthouses and diaphones were even used as fire alarms sending out coded blasts to firemen. [2]
