[edit] About Diane
Diane arrived as the mother of Bernice Blackstock and now co-owns the Woolpack pub, alongside younger sister Val, whom as a child had to look after following the death of their mother. Diane was at one point best friends with her ex-co-owner Louise Appleton and is one of the few people that know Louise is a murderer.
[edit] Marriages
Diane was married to Rodney Blackstock earlier in life and they had daughter Bernice together, However, Rodney left them following two extramarital affairs, including one with her sister Val, which resulted Val giving birth to their son Paul. Diane also had a failed romance with Alan Turner.
Jack Sugden had endured a tough time after discovering his wife Sarah had been cheating on him and Diane had given him a shoulder to cry on. The pair kissed in 2000 but decided to be just good friends. That changed when in 2001, Jack clearly needed her in his life, at a time when Diane's past was rapidly catching up with her.
After going AWOL for 26 years, her ex-husband Rodney Blackstock turned up very unexpectedly causing problems between Diane and Bernice. Although her daughter accepted Rodney into her life in time, Diane was more hesitant; however, it was relatively clear that a spark still existed between the former spouses. This was confirmed when they shared a night together, followed by a decision by Diane that it would be the last time they will ever behave like a married couple. After a brief relationship with builder Mack, Diane returned to Jack and the potential couple started to seriously consider a life together.
It was evident that Diane was missing Bernice, who had moved to Brighton to start a new life. Diane made the decision to go and live with her, which took Jack by surprise and resulted in him proposing in a desperate attempt to ensure she stayed. Diane accepted his proposal, and at their engagement party Diane's estranged sister Val, arrived.
[edit] Illness
In 2004, Diane was horrified to discover she had colon cancer. She made a spur of the moment decision by travelling to Scarborough in an attempt to try and digest the news, with Rodney accomenying her, unaware of the illness she has been diagnoed with. Val immediately assumes they're having an affair. Upon finding out the truth of Diane's illness, Rodney ends his short-lived relationship with Val and begs Diane to give their relationship another chance.
Diane rejected Rodney's offer, and shortly afterwards started to plan her wedding to Jack. On their big day, Diane and Jack run the gauntlet of emotions when his daughter Victoria reveals that Diane has cancer in front of a shocked congregation. At a time when the situation couldn't be imagined to be any worse, Val takes the opportunity to reveal that she had an affair with Rodney in the past when he was married to Diane, resulting in him fathering their son, Paul.
Horrified by Val's selfishness, Diane disowns her once again and the only ray of light is when she's given the all clear from cancer in early 2005.
[edit] The Sugden Family
The new matriarch of the Sugdens with Jack's children’s problems didn't aid during the duration of Diane's recovery. When Andy fell out with his brother Daz, it was left to Jack and Diane to pick up the pieces. Given the stressful exeperience that Diane was recovering from during this time, she didn’t have the strength to take on a troubled teenager.
Although trying to be supportive, Diane had to put her foot down and insisted Daz must go back to live with Andy. Although experiencing feelings of guilt, she knew the right decision was for Daz to return his brother, yet didn't expect Daz's reaction when he declared he was leaving the village to live back with his mother.
More recently, Diane is trying to cope with Victoria’s pre-teenage rebellion whilst at the same time keeping the Woolpack running smoothly. Back in 2006, she once again saw her life thrown into danger when she was a victim of the Kings' River Show Home explosion, but luckily made a full recovery. In 2007, Diane had an emotional affair with Billy Hopwood, she and Jack tried to sort through their marital problems but they separated.
