Dhimal

Dhimals are one of the indigenous people of Nepal and India, they live around the Terai region of Morang and Jhapa. Their facial features, Language and religious practices are so close to Limbu people that they are also called the Limbus of the Terai. They also show the characteristic habit of quick temper and aggressiveness of the Limbu people. They have their own language, culture and customs. Dhimal women are good in weaving and they have their unique dress among the ethnic peoples of Nepal. Their religion is animistic very close to Kirant religion.They worship nature and other household gods.Their polulation according to 2001 census is 19,539. According to Indian census 2001, the Dhimal is one of the smallest tribes in India, totaling a number of approximately 981 people and continue to speak in their native Dhimal language. They are residing at Mallbari near Siliguri, West Bengal.

Dhimals consider themselves of Kirati descent. They consider Athpahariya Rai, Limbu and Koche people of Terai as their brethern.
