[edit] Casting
The film was launched initially with Jayam Ravi paired opposite Genelia D'Souza, however she opted out of the project due to fully booked dates for her Telugu film, Dhee. After Genelia's removal from the project other leading actresses such as Asin Thottumkal and Mamta Mohandas were approached for a key role in the film, but they also neglected the offer citing callsheets for other projects.
Reema Sen was then roped in for a significant role in the film but however, 14 days after her confirmal she pulled out of the project citing differences with the director, Jeeva. The role offered to Reema Sen, was the role of a lawyer, but the role had no songs and was the second heroine role. Reema Sen was overshadowed by other female leads in her three previous films, as in Thimiru, Vallavan and Rendu to Shriya Reddy, Nayanthara and Anushka Shetty respectively. Reema Sen confirmed later to Kumudham magazine that she did not want to play second lead in the film, and opted out of the project. On February 19, 2007, the producers confirmed they had roped in Kangana Ranaut to essay the role dropped by Reema Sen. Kangana Ranaut will make her debut in the Tamil film industry with the film. Kangana is being paid 75 Indian rupee lakhs for the project, an all Indian record for a regional newcomer actress. Lakshmi Rai, in the biggest film of her career, joined the team and appeared as the second heroine in the project..
[edit] Jeeva's death and other problems
The film's crew, originally had problems maintaining a visa to film in St. Petersburg, Russia and decided to relocate the scenes to Prague in the Czech Republic, however eventually they obtained visas to shoot in Russia. On June 26, 2007, director Jeeva died after suffering a heart-attack during the shoot. In early July 2007, it was announced that M. Raja, elder sibling of Jayam Ravi would complete the project but however veteran director, P. C. Sriram signed to complete the project with Jeeva's widow Aneez.[4] Finally Aneez Jeeva announced that the film would be completed by her and Jeeva's assistant Manikandan, whilst, Sriram would overlook their efforts.
