Dave studied medicinal chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Insitute in Troy, NY, completing his B.S. cum laude in 1995, while participating in research on biocompatable coatings under the direction of Prof. Gary Wnek. He then went on to the Polymer Science and Engineering department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and later moved with his advisor, Prof. David Tirrell, to the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena in 1998. Dave completed his Ph.D. from UMass PS&E in 2004, having worked on the solid-phase synthesis of block copolymers comprising polythiophenes and engineered polypeptides.

He is currently an editor at a well-known materials science journal. Outside of scientific publishing, his main interest is combining analog photography with digital printing. He is married and lives near Heidelberg, Germany.
