[edit] Welcome!

Hi, DF08, Welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Before getting too in-depth, you may want to read about the five pillars of Wikipedia. If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ , plus if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. And if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my user talk page.

[edit] Additional tips

Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!

 • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
 • You can sign your name using three tildes, like — <span style="color:gray;">Ilγαηερ</span> <span style="color: #333333;">(Tαlκ)</span>. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
 • You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
 • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
 • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

[edit] Happy Wiki-ing.

[edit] Jingshen/Jingcheng Expressways...

Hi, DF08. Welcome to WP!

I found the articles for Jingshen Expressway and Jingcheng Expressway while fixing links to Great Wall that should have been Great Wall of China.

Is this two expressways, or just two articles on the same one using a different name? I've noticed that the artciles are structured differently, making it hard to compare the two. I also noticed that you have edited both, so I figured you'd be the one to know. If they are talking about the same one, then I'd suggest merging the content to one page and replacing the other page with a redirect link (by writing #REDIRECT name of page at the top of the article).

I would suggest trying to follow a convention where possible (i.e. listing the same information in the same order) so that it is easy to compare articles on similar topics.

Cheers!

- RealGrouchy 18:09, 3 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hi RealGrouchy: Jingshen and Jingcheng are two different expressways. Jingcheng shoots north towards Miyun and Chengde while Jingshen spans east towards Shanghaiguan and Shenyang. Your recommendations taken with appreciation and gratitude. :-) --DF08 18:18, Jul 3, 2004 (UTC)

Nice job on all those articles on roads and expressways. You have been congratulated at Wikipedia:Great_editing_in_progress. ☞spencer195 21:11, 11 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thank you so much Spencer195. :-) To say something in response in Chinese, zhe shi ying gai de (which translates into "I think I should do this" or "It is only proper", as in a positive sense)... Wikipedia has provided me with some stellar articles on China and Taiwan, and I think to do my part, which is to return some contributions on things I know, e.g. Beijing, is only proper. :-) --DF08 01:56, Jul 12, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] districts of Beijing

(moved to Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Chinese))

Yeah... i've made a recent template on the districts and counties of Beijing at Template:Beijing, see if you like the format. Furthermore, interested in editing more southern expressways in China as opposed to strictly sticking to Beijing and surrounding area? Colipon -- (Talk) 03:02, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)
On template: great stuff. On expressways: no prob, but I've only been around in the Beijing area, so I don't know as much as I would if I actually drove on them. But for every drip of info, I'm ready to share them all. :-)
Just a note, DF, it is not typical to reply on your own talk page every time. Oh... you know how they have the template on the US Interstate highways, maybe there should be one for Chinese expressways as well. Colipon -- (Talk) 02:03, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Highways/Expressways

Hi, DF08. I have saw your Beijing roads and expressways template. For further development in the future, a similar template can be constructed in every Chinese province. Colipon+(T) 03:47, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Yes, it may be a problem. It would be really helpful if there was some kind of website on Chinese Expressways and roads, or perhaps railways as well. Be noted, too, that in the United States, Interstate Highways do merge at times, and later separate again. I am not completely sure if this is the situation with Jingshi. I have listed the format for the names on articles regarding Chinese Transportation on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Chinese), if you have not checked this already, please tell me if the format should be improved. Thanks, Colipon+(T) 04:07, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hello, I went on Chinahighway.com and couldn't find any maps or pages on specific highways, just wondering, do they actually have these on the website? Colipon+(T) 17:45, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Photos

Hi DF08. You have some really well taken photos, but I think some of them need a digital touchup. I just did Image:BeijingFromTian'anmenChenglouJul2004.jpg, and if you like it, I'll do some other ones you've uploaded. One problem I'm running into though is it's hard when the photo has already been jpeg'ed and shrunk to work on it without loosing a lot of otherwise good detail, eg. Image:BeijingCityWalls1.jpg.

If you don't mind me touching up the photos, would you consider e-mailing me a larger version? My address is my username (with a period for the space) at gmail.com. --

iPhoto is a great tool for managing photos (my other machine is a powerbook), but a little light on the manipulation tools. Send over any photos you want, I'd be happy to work on them. On a side note, nice work with the Beijing page (I was there recently, hence my interest). --d 01:08, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Expressway maps

Hi DF08,

Nice continued work on the expressway articles. Is it possible to have some maps or schematic diagrams showing the location or routes of the expressways? -spencer195 18:48, 9 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi Spencer195,

These maps will be coming soon! I've already done one or two for a few expressways (e.g. Jingzhang), these will get them first. Maps take quite some time, but the moment a map for an expwy is done, I'll add it to the article. Thanks again for the encouragement!

Best, --DF08 19:06, Oct 9, 2004 (UTC)

PS: Check out the 5th Ring Road article in Chinese -- it's got a map (scroll down), that's a prototype of an earlier map I made. (I wasn't born an artist, so improvements to come...) The new ones will be unified in size (300x300, as the pictures) and be a bit more informative.

Hi again,
Check out Jingcheng Expressway -- how do you like the map? I used OmniGraffle on Mac OS X 10.3 to do it... wasn't all too difficult. --DF08 (English) 15:13, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Nice. It makes it a lot easier to understand and visualize. -spencer195 19:19, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the congratulations. –spencer195 13:53, 29 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Note

68.194.108.16 caught your typo on Tiananmen Gate right hand signage, first character (two articles). I should have been more alert. Best wishes, Leonard G. 23:13, 29 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Admin nomination

Hi DF08,

I am thinking about nominating you as an administrator. Would you accept this? User:Spencer195–spencer195 04:12, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Congratulations!

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 04:56, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] RFC pages on VfD

Should RFC pages be placed on VfD to be deleted? I'm considering removing Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Slrubenstein, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jwrosenzweig and Wikipedia:Requests for comment/John Kenney from WP:VFD. Each of them was listed by CheeseDreams. Your comments on whether I should do this would be appreciated. - Ta bu shi da yu 03:35, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] Image tag?

Thanks for uploading Image:BadalingExpwyNov02.jpg — was wondering if you knew its source, and if you’d be willing to tag it to help with an ongoing project? Many thanks! Schisselbowl listen 20:35, Dec 21, 2004 (UTC)

Appreciated, and if you have time to help with the Image tagging project even more so ;) Very best and Happy Solstice! Schisselbowl listen 04:38, Dec 22, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Naming conventions

Hi DF08,

I'm thinking about proposing a change to the naming conventions for Chinese expressways, for example, Shitai Expressway --> Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan Expressway. We already have one known case of name duplication (Beijing to Shenyang vs. Beijing to Shenzhen); it's pretty likely that we'll have more, especially if we use the same standard for railways. Plus, names like Jingshen Expressway look quite apparent in Chinese characters, but in pinyin they look indecipherable.

On the other hand, I am aware that expressway signs in China use "Jingshen", not "Beijing-Shenyang"...

So what do you think? -- ran (talk) 08:41, Feb 27, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Nodal points in Lake Zurich?

Hi, I'm not sure I understand what you meat when you wrote that "The only three nodal points are Zürich, Pfäffikon SZ and Rapperswil." in Lake Zurich. Would you mind explaining? The comment seems to be somewhat out of context as well, it would be nice to have an explanation in the article. /probell (Talk) 22:02, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:N6thRingRoad Nov2002.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:N6thRingRoad Nov2002.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nv8200p talk 13:25, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Links

In the case of the USA, links to San Bernardino should be changed to San Bernardino, California, San Bernardino County, California, San Bernardino Valley or San Bernardino Mountains as the case may be. Peter Horn 20:29, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject Beijing

Hey DF08! I'm currently planning the launch of the WikiProject Beijing, depending on if enough other editors would be interested in such a project. I saw you have edited the main Beijing page recently or in several times in the past and therefor might be interested. If you are, please sign: User:Poeloq/WikiProject_Beijing. As I am posting this to quite a few editors, I am not watching your page and would ask you to reply with any comment or questions on my talk page. Cheers, Poeloq (talk) 21:43, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:RoadTunnel_Switzerland.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:RoadTunnel_Switzerland.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 01:08, 30 May 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Kelly hi! 01:08, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
