Dexter-Linwood

The Dexter-Linwood area is located on Detroit's Westside and is known as one of the most dangerous area's in the city. This area has been declining since the 12th Street Riot in 1967.

In the 1940s middle-class African Americans began moving into the formerly Jewish neighborhood along Dexter and Linwood Avenue. 12th Street in particular became the epicenter for black life in Detroit in the 1950s and had some of the highest population densities in the United States. The 12th Street Riot of 1967 precipitated a rapid decline in the area and by the early 1970s the 10th police precint of Detroit was one of the crime capitals of America. The Infomous Young Boys Inc. was headquarted in the Dexter-Linwood Area.
