[edit] Why they didn't marry
Was is not because of issues of caste? Paro was from the dancing girl caste and they forced her to marry into the landlord (warrior) caste (I'm not sure about Dev's caste). There was also something about "girl sellers" (since most Indian society requires the girl's family to pay the boy's family before marriage, but Paro's family was different). The acting, music, directing, and story are incredible! Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 20:24, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not sure... I've only seen this version and the 1955 version... but, this version makes it seem like colonial power is an issue--the rank and status associated with it. I think the simplest explanation is just that the father doesn't think her family is good enough and doesn't want it. I haven't read (a translation of) the book so... I'm not sure how it's dealt with there. So, family respect? and in the 2002 version he gets angry and leaves... and doesn't take her because of a certain respect for his family (and then there's then note) and her family pride gets her married off to a 'better' family. :( gren グレン 05:31, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
The ending is brilliant as his hands flutter and the flower petals fall. It reminded me of the ballet 'The dying Swan' when the Russian ballet great Pavlova flutters her hands at the end of the ballet as the swan dies. (glynis.davies@gmail.com) 29.03.07. Western Australia
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Devdas.jpg
Image:Devdas.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:44, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
