[edit] Disciples

Should we be building this section or removing it? Seems slightly irrelevant, as it could get rather lengthy but doesn't actually add much to Devamrta Swami's encylopedia page Dwayne Kirkwood

[edit] verifiable.

Break things up into sections, dont just delete whole chunks of information for whatever reason. If its verifiable its got a right to exist.

[edit] 1974-1994

Someone has to explain Devamrtas history from 1974-1994. 20 years is not an irrellevant detail. A good deal of his pass times were with Kirtananda at New Vrindaban, thats not irrellevant.

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a devotee propaganda machine.

Also does anyone know if the complete archive of GBC resolutions are avaliable online? Seems their old website went offline, taking a vital part of ISKCON history with it. Bukti 08:11, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Devamrta or Devamrita

Currently the page is under the heading Devamrta, with a redirect on Devamrita. However, recently most of the Devamrta's have been changed to Devamrita. For consistancy, we should go with either one or the other. In a letter dated 29th of July 1975, Prabhupada refers to Devamrta Swami - "I also accept the following disciples as twice born brahmanas. Devamrta dasa brahmacari and Gopiparanadhana das brahmacari." Though there is a lot more cases where it's spelt Devamrita. Thoughts? Dwayne Kirkwood 21:40, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

  • deva = demigod amrta = deathless / immortal ~ http://vedabase.org/m/mrta amrita = nectarean. Devamrita = nectar of the demigods. It's a reference to the amrita that was churned from the milk ocean, delivered by the Dhanvantari avatara. Devamrita Swami took sannyasa from Harikesa Swami.
  • btw does anyone know his birth name? Jay something i think, cant remember tho. Bukti 02:39, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

The name on his passport is Jay Matsya.

  • im still not convinced either way. Maybe he was initiated as devamrta, then kirtananda changed it to devamrita? Bukti 07:56, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

see my note above

  • Perhaps it is just Devamrita. The only solid evidence for Devamrta is the letter from Prabhupada, but as you state, there is 'another' Devamrta, so it could have been him. Dwayne Kirkwood 18:04, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

It's a question of romanization. Devamrita is the preferred spelling, because it's correct in terms of English. Devamrta is what it looks like if you try to write it using strict equivalence, but without the dot under the r. (--josh) It's a question of writing a Sanskrit name using english letters, nothing more. No special significance. It's like nama, nam, and naam. There are multiple ways to render Indic language words into Latin alphabet.

What is his ethnicity? 212.113.23.124 16:44, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Devamrita 1975.jpg

Image:Devamrita 1975.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
