It is interesting to know how Devrukhe brahmins got a name as Devrukhe.

500 years ago also there is a reference of this name in old literature. As per the "Shataprashnakalpalata" a Sanskrit literature published around 1690 AD, there is a reference that Devrukhe name has come from Devrukh, a place near Sangameshwar, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, India. Devrukhes were previously known as Devarshi Brahmins. There is a letter penned by Veda Shastra Sappan Shri Ganesh shastri Kozarekar, mentioning in 1583 AD, at Kashi (A Spiritual capital of India) mentioning that Devarshi Brahmins are Devrukhes. A letter dated 1727 and another letter dated 1774 written by Gagabhatta Dikshit Vyas paithankar also show that Devrukhe name is in practice from 1370 AD onwards. There is no specific information what people used to recognize Devrukhes as whether they were part of Deshastha or Karhade. But comparing to gotras which are common to both Devrukhes and Karhades viz a viz Deshasthas it can be inferred that Devrukhes are more nearer to Karhades.

It is also said that Bhanu Tera was an ancient originator (Mul Purush) of Devrukhe community. As per the sensus done by Devrukhes in 1931 there are 98 Original Villages [1]inhabited by Devrukhes near and around Konkan however Devrukhes are also spread across Mumbai, Thane,Dombivali, Pune, Dahivali,Karjat, Umbargaon, Indore and many other places. There are 72 Surnames, 12 Gotras [2], 19 Kuladaiwatas [3]. Devrukhes are highly educated, social, patriotic, peace loving, responsible community, which give respect to all other communities and equal opportunities to both genders.
