Devo the Cursed

Devo the Cursed is a minor, fictional character appearing in the Japanese manga JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (ジョジョの奇妙な冒険 Jojo no kimyōna bōken?), by Hirohiko Araki. The character is portrayed as an enemy of the protagonist.

[edit] Character/Stand

Devo (or "Soul Sacrifice" in the Viz Media translation) is a Native American shaman who works as an assassin for hire. To aid him in his craft, he employs the Ebony Devil Stand, the strength and ferocity of which correlates with its user's raw hatred for his or her opponent. To enkindle such a grudge, Devo goads his victims into attacking and injuring him. He then leaves the immediate area, letting his Stand assault the victim at a later, unguarded moment. Though this strategy has earned Devo countless scars, none of his targets has ever survived his retribution, nor been able to relay any information on the nature of his powers. For this reason, it is said that they have succumbed to a curse. Due to his proficiency, Devo's services are sought after by politicians, police forces, military officials and Mafia dons alike.

Like many of the series' antagonists, Devo displays sadistic tendencies, streaks of insanity and unhealthy levels of confidence in his abilities. He appears to take pride in his principle of never allowing a slight to go unpunished, and it is clear that he pursues his career for purposes of bloodthirst as much as monetary gain.

[edit] Encounter with Polnareff

Devo first appears in a hotel room in Singapore, hiding in a refrigerator. Polnareff immediately senses his presence and asks him his name. As Devo summons the Ebony Devil (which appears as an ominous-looking, insectoid/humanoid idol), Polnareff lets Silver Chariot stab him repeatedly. In doing so, however, he gives Devo sufficient reason to hate him. Devo says as much and flees the scene, leaving Polnareff confused. Shortly thereafter, a freakish doll that is located on top of a dresser suddenly comes to life and begins wreaking havoc in the room. Having trapped Polnareff under a bed, it attacks him relentlessly with all manner of weaponry, including a straight razor, a spear and even shampoo. While initially at a distinct disadvantage from not being able to see the doll/Ebony Devil from underneath the bed, Polnareff eventually uses a shard of a broken mirror to determine its location and manages to stab it just before it can electrocute him with a hairdryer. He then proceeds to shred it with a barrage of stabs, spelling the end of both it and Devo, who is controlling it from inside a bathroom stall elsewhere in the hotel.

[edit] Trivia

Devo's name is taken from the 80's rock group Devo.

It is unknown whether the Ebony Devil was actually tied to the doll it possessed, or if it could possess other inanimate objects, and the doll was merely the most convenient choice given the circumstances.
