Devendra "Dev" Alahan is a character on the British soap opera Coronation Street portrayed by Jimmi Harkishin. He first appeared on the show in November 1999. He is the owner of a chain of seven shops in the Manchester area and bought the shop on the street from his uncle Ravi after he returned to India.

[edit] Storylines

A former girlfriend of Dev's named Amy followed him to Weatherfield claiming to everyone that she had been promised marriage by him, which he denied and claimed she was a mad woman. She then claimed she was pregnant by him and pretended to attempt suicide. Upon returning to the Rovers Return Inn with bandaged wrists, Dev exposed her lies by ripping off the bandages revealing no cuts.

Sometime later Dev almost married barmaid Geena Gregory, but her mother wasn't happy with the situation and set him up by involving Karen McDonald, and they were caught together in the flat. Although she forgave him on that occasion, Geena later left Dev and took up with Joe Carter.

Dev saved shopworker Sunita Parekh from an arranged marriage in India and gave her a safe haven in the flat above the shop. Sunita developed feelings for Dev but he just saw her as a friend, though he later became involved with her. His other girlfriends included the sister of Natalie Horrocks (landlady of the Rover's Return), and Tracy Barlow, who wrecked his flat after discovering that he had no intention of marrying her. He also slept with Deirdre Barlow, who was employed by him at the shop.

Dev later met solicitor Maya Sharma, when he was on the rebound from Sunita, who had rejected him in favour of barman Ciaran. He set up home with Maya, but when Sunita was taken seriously ill, Maya became jealous, and Dev was forced to choose between them. Dev went back to Sunita, enraging Maya in the process, and she smashed up the flat and set up Sunita with an illegal immigration scam, and she was arrested at her marriage to Dev. Sunita was jailed, though not for long when a taxi driver came forward with information that got Maya arrested and Sunita freed.

Maya was released on bail, and with murder in mind she tied up Sunita and one by one set fire to each of Dev's shops. When Dev arrived she knocked him unconscious, and left both him and Sunita to die in the fire, but they were saved by Ciaran McCarthy and Charlie Stubbs.

Dev's marriage to Sunita flowed smoothly for a while, and the couple were overjoyed to discover they were having twins, which resulted in Dev selling his share of Streetcars to Lloyd Mullaney so he could buy a house for his expanding family. However during 2005, Sunita took in Amber Kalirai, the daughter of one of his shop workers who was ill in hospital. Dev was ill at ease having Amber in the flat, and Sunita found out from her mother that Dev had fathered the girl during an affair years ago. However it turned out that Amber was just the tip of the iceberg... Dev has several other daughters by women who worked in his shops. It also turned out that Dev was a grandfather. Sunita was devastated not only by the secret, but also that Dev was more than happy having little to no contact with his children and promptly left him although she did allow him to be present at the birth of the twins, Asha and Aadi. While Dev was overjoyed at their birth (especially as, despite having several other children, Aadi was his first son) Sunita was unable to forgive him. Eventually in January 2006 Sunita finally left Dev for good with the twins moving into the house that Dev bought for them, although she still lets him see them.

The following February Amber (who had learned the truth about her parentage) came to stay with Dev at the shop as her mother was leaving for Finland with her new boyfriend but Amber wished to remain in Weatherfield. At first Dev refused point blank to allow her to live with him, as he was still bitter about the part Amber played in his marriage breakdown, but eventually he thawed towards her and allowed her to move in.

In July 2006 Dev learned that Sunita was seeing another man and he feared that it would alter his relationship with the twins.

Dev continues to run the corner shop with daughter Amber.

On New Years Eve 2007, Dev took over as best man for Vernon Tomlin at his wedding to Liz McDonald.

Recently, Dev has had few storylines, appearing only as a background character.
