Detroit City Council

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Detroit City Council is the legislative body of the City of Detroit, Michigan. The City Council consists of nine members elected at-large for a four-year term. Ballot attempts to elect council members from city wards have failed. As of 2001, Detroit is the largest city in the country to elect its entire legislative council at-large.[1]

The City Council was first constituted as the legislative body of the City in 1824 and was called the Common Council until July 1, 1974 - the effective date of Detroit's new City Charter.
