Detective Sergeant Siobhan Clarke

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Detective Sergeant Siobhan [pronounced Shi-vawn]Clarke is a fictional detective in the Inspector Rebus series of novels by Scottish author Ian Rankin. She first appears in The Black Book.

Her English background, degree and middle class parents set her apart from the other officers on the force. Despite this and being one of the youngest members of the team, she has gained Rebus's friendship, with occasional hints of something more. She is a devoted follower of Hibernian Football Club.

At her first appearance in the series, Clarke is a DC, but gets promoted to Detective Sergeant by the time of Resurrection Men.

As the Rebus series progresses, DS Clarke plays an increasing role, often working with the protagonist DI Rebus in his cases, but she also has her own secondary cases to work as well. She is the more technically-minded of the two detectives, and often has to do lots of the legwork for Rebus.

It has been speculated by some that DS Clarke may take over in Rankins novels as his lead character if Rebus does enter retirement after the end of Exit Music.

[edit] TV series

In the Rebus television dramatisations, Clarke has been played by Gayanne Potter (series one), and Claire Price in the later series.
