Destriero was denied the Blue Riband award in 1992, because Destriero was classed as a "private yacht" and not a "commercial passenger vessel", despite sailing at an as yet unbeaten speed record of 53.1 knots average from New York to England without refueling. This Atlantic Ocean crossing speed record remains standing today. Incat 049 "Master Cat" currently holds the Blue Riband.
Destriero is 67 m (220 ft) long, 13 m (43 ft) wide, 400 ton displacement, 60,000 horsepower, and 110 km/h (59.4 Knots,68.4 MPH) maximum speed. The ship uses light metal and modern technology, which helped it achieve such great speed.
The ship was a ferry operating the in Mediterranean Sea. The ship has been "laid up" in HMNB Devonport dockyard, Plymouth, England for the last 10 years.
