Dessie Dolan is a Gaelic football player for Westmeath and Garrycastle. He won a Leinster Senior Football Championship medal with Westmeath in 2004.
He is widely regarded as Westmeaths leading talisman throughout their ascension from GAA minnow, to quality opposition. Despite the growth and promise demonstrated in their 1999 U21 All Ireland victory the current crop of players may be viewed as 'might have beens'
Westmeath have experienced their most successful GAA period of their history in the last seven years (2001-2008).
Largely due to virtually unmatchable talent in attack westmeath forced their way into GAA pundits heads as up-setters and sometimes favourites. Two Division 2 league titles spear-headed by Dolans attacking prowess and eventually in 2004 championship success in winning a leinster title finally showed the squads promise.
Westmeath reached 3 All Ireland Quarter Finals since the revamped championship system of 2001, Dolan starring each season (2001, 2004, 2006).
At club level Dessie has won numerous underage titles including back to back senior titles in 2005 and 2006 with club, Garycastle. He has been selected for the Irish International Rules team regularly till the series was suspended in 2006.
He is a well respected man in GAA circles both locally and nationally.[citation needed]
