Desire2Learn is a developer of online Learning Management Systems (LMS) for schools, higher education, associations, government and private industry. Headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, President and CEO John Baker co-founded the company along with Anil Sabharwal in 1999[1]. Today the company supports over 4 million learners worldwide [2].


Desire2Learn is the developer of the eLearning Enterprise suite, which includes:

  • Learning Environment – a web-based suite of teaching and learning tools that provide course development, delivery and management
  • Learning Repository – an integrated standards-based Learning Object Repository that provides storing, tagging, researching and reusing of learning objects
  • LiveRoom – a set of communication tools to enable real-time collaboration between instructors and students
  • ePortfolio – a system for collecting, organizing, reflecting on, and presenting learning artifacts. It can be used for presenting materials for assignments, working on group projects, peer review, resume creation and job seeking, and developing a full portfolio of work. It can also be used for social learning applications
  • Essentials – a smaller set of web-based tools that provide course development, delivery and management


In 2007, Desire2Learn was named by the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 program to be the 12th fastest growing technology company in Canada. [3]
