Design Science (DSI) was founded in Long Beach, California in 1986 to develop the math equation authoring tools Equation Editor and MathType.[1]

In 2000, they purchased Geometry Technologies in St. Paul, Minnesota and acquired the WebEQ software line for authoring and presenting MathML on the world wide web.

MathPlayer, released in 2002, enables Internet Explorer to process MathML content, including accessibility related issues MathPlayer allows MathML content to be spoken aloud by a screen reader or magnified. DSI began releasing MathFlow products for supporting math and science in XML publishing workflows in 2003.

Currently, NSF funding is supporting DSI research into improving math and science communication - in print, on the web, through audio, and other media.
