Deshpande (Marathi: देशपांडे) is a common surname in the states of Maharashtra and Northern Karnataka, India. More than 96% of Deshpandes belongs to Deshastha Brahmin community. However this surname also found in CKP community, there are at least 100 CKP(Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu) families having this surname. Very few GSB families are also having this surname.

Deshpande derives from the Marathi title dešpande, or 'district accountant', formerly a hereditary office, and is ultimately derived from the Sanskrit terms dešha 'country', 'district' and pandita or 'learned man'.
