Desborough Island is a large artificially-created island in the River Thames on the reach above Sunbury Lock. It is almost uninhabited being mainly open space and playing fields. The island has access from Walton Lane in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.

The island was formed in 1930’s by the cutting of the Desborough Channel for improving the flow of the Thames, and is named after Lord Desborough. It covers 45 hectares of which 14 hectares is open space. It is a site of nature conservation importance and is looked after by Elmbridge’s commons management team. The island has many owners: The North Surrey Water company, University Vandals Rugby Club, The Environment Agency, Surrey County and Elmbridge Borough councils. The island allows a pleasant round trip for boats operating out of Walton.

Efforts have been made to improve the environment of the island.[1] Furthermore hedges have been relaid to improve the habitat.[2]
