The Des Moines Metro Opera was founded by Dr. Robert Larsen and Douglas Duncan in 1973. A summer opera festival, the company usually performs three operas in rolling repertory during June and July. Most performances are in the Blank Performing Arts Center on the campus of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. [1]
An important part of the Des Moines Metro Opera is its Apprentice Artists program which every summer gives approximately sixty young singers a chance to study with vocal coaches and perform with seasoned performers. The Apprentice Artists perform in the chorus, prepare short scenes, and occasionally perform small solos in main-stage productions.
Singers who had their start at DMMO include: John Osbourn, Kimm Julian,[2] Jane Redding, Beverly Thiele, Theodore Green, and Lauren Flanigan [3]
In 1986 DMMO premiered a new opera of Shakespeare's The Tempest with music by Lee Hoiby and a libretto by Mark Shulgasser[4]. The opera was broadcast on Iowa Public Television.
