DeSutter is a surname of Flemish derivation. Its meaning pertains to farming or milling (wheat grinding). DeSutters originated in the northern parts of Belgium in the Ghent (Gent) area near the English Channel, as well as in Northwestern France. Variants include DeSoto, DeZuter and DeZutter.
A majority of the DeSutters moved to the United States in the mid to late Nineteenth century and early Twentieth century. Most settled in the upper plain states of the Midwest (Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and the Dakotas) for the vast farming lands as well as the Catholic mission work.
