In creating this page I note that according to the 'Old Derbian' a history is being written. I suggest that the writing of that history might be made easier if it were carried out here on wikipedia, possibly branching off to a detailed History of Derby School page. More details of each era might also be gathered on pages such as Derby School - 1960's. Though there is a danger of going beyond the normal bounds of an encyclopedia with such information, Wikipedia provides such an attractive way to gather information on a famous school that I cannot see such an approach being seriously challenged by Wikipedia editors (space on Wikipedia is not a problem). Personally, I would like to see an account of past teachers and what became of them. --Lindosland 14:52, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

I've contributed some of my memories of the school from the later 60s and early 70s. I agree with the idea of a project to capture some of the personal history of this school which, I'm sure, played a great part in many boys lives. I don't currently have an account on Wikipedia, Terry Booth (Derby School, 1965-1972)

There appears to be some contention about the motto of the school and it's translation. Vita Sine Litteris Mors is the school motto, the verb 'est' is assumed and the translation is Life without Learning is the one I always understood whilst at the school - Terry Booth 1 March 2007.

I agree with Terry. I was at Derby School from 1968 to 1975 and the blazer badge was " Vita Sine Litteris Mors" (note the apparent incorrect Latin Grammer). The first thing "Sweat" Elliott told us "seccies" was that it stood for "Life Without Learning is Death". - Dave Cartledge (Fullers House - 1968-1975)

[edit] Quality

As a page this is more than a stub but in my opinion it lacks references and a complete history to bring it up to the standard that it importance demands. If this is the school founded all those centuries ago then it is very important to the schools project.Victuallers 15:22, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Improvement

This page has come on amazingly, I am sure it is a B now and I think you could put it forward for higher ratings. The way to do this is to add it to the Schools Project Assessment page. The fact that you created the Derbyshire template for all the local schools to is brilliant. Had an idea..... I'll be back Victuallers 13:45, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] in line reffing

I have started to add in-line referencing using the ref and reflist tags. I'm not sure it looks better now - but I'm hoping that you can now see how it could look much better. Their should also be a last sub title of external links at the end of the article. What I haven't demonstrated that you can use the same ref over and over again which is probably appropriate for the alumni. After you have used a ref and given it the name="DerbyAlumni"> then <ref name="DerbyAlumni"/> will allow you to use the same ref over and over again. Do note the final / in the tag.. its v.important. Hope this helps. P.S. You should use the blockquote tag for large quotes Victuallers 14:13, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Thank you again, Victuallers, I've been working on it. Xn4 10:03, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Walchelin de Ferriers

Have you found the "de ferrers" try Henry de ferrers who was given lands. I's sure there must be a link ... we need a historian. Victuallers 21:31, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

I have started a Walkelin de Derby article. It appears that a Norman called Henri de Ferrieres was his father. Xn4 10:09, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
Hi...yes. Henry has been a major article for me. He was "given" every important manor/village in Derbyshire as a reward for helping at Hastings in 1066 etc. If you look at "what links here" for Henry ... then thats my work (mostly) Victuallers 19:16, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] More Images

I've uploaded more images from my visit in May. Apologies for the delay OldDerbeian 12:27, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Great pics, Terry! Well done. Xn4 21:28, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GA/A/FA Assessment

This article is contending for one of the above classes withing WikiProject Derbsyhire! Please help get it up to one of these levels, and post any ideas below! Bluegoblin7 14:49, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

We're making some progress, Bluegoblin. I'll leave a note here when I think we're ready for a GA attempt. Xn4 21:48, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Alleyne FitzHerbert

I though you may be interested to know that a (small) picture of a Derby School old boy will be on the main page in the next 12 hours or so. Alleyne FitzHerbert is the lead DYK. Victuallers 11:24, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Well done, Victuallers! Xn4 21:48, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 1960's Pics

I've chosen these for the fun element, as well as the fact that they show surroundings and teachers familiar to many. Too many such photos could become a problem, but they are easily taken down. What do you think? --Memestream (talk) 02:05, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

I think they are all fine, they should be kept. Xn4 02:59, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Section Ordering

The Cadet forces and Notable masters sections have been inserted as subsections of the St. Helen's House Period. The Cadet forces in fact we active during the start (at least until 1972) of the Littleover period. So perhaps these two section might be better placed following the Littleover Period. Certainly, many of the masters listed for the St. Helen's House period also taught at the Littleover school. What do you think? OldDerbeian 12:52, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

I agree, Terry. I've made the changes you suggested, and I've added "The CCF survived into the years at Littleover." Xn4 03:13, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Use of A and B blocks?

"The St Helen's House complex consisted of the House itself (called 'A'-block), which contained mainly administrative offices". During my time there (1960-65) many lessons were held in A Block, notably English, French and history. B block contained the physics and biology labs and a room for maths and RI. Is it true that A block was mainly administrative, perhaps before my time? --Lindosland (talk) 14:30, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

You're right, we should also mention the classrooms, and I'm not sure about the "mainly", so I've changed that to read "which contained classrooms and offices". Is that agreeable, Lindosland? Xn4 12:26, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes, that's fine thanks. --Lindosland (talk) 13:12, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Boathouse at Parker's Piece

I can't recollect boat houses at Parker's Piece - but the little bit of rowing that I did at the school was later than my St.Helen's house time. After the school had left St. Helen's House, boats were housed at the Derby Rowing club site which was further down and the other side of the river. Can anyone else confirm the boat houses at Parker's Piece? Were they next to the pavilion?

[edit] Derby School Crest

I found this [1] whilst looking for a better source for an image of the derby school crest. It contains a picture of a Derby School crest from 1906 on a Wills Tobacco card. The crest is not like one I have seen before. Not sure whether it is worthy (or possible) to include it.

OldDerbeian (talk) 11:16, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

As coloured, that's new to me, but the design is pretty much the same as in the shield which survives on B-Block and also as on the cap badge of the school corps dating from the 1940s (see Derby School article). Presumably it was a variation on the 'heraldic badge' devised by Walter Clark in 1883, which of course wasn't actually granted by the College of Arms. As the cigarette card dates from 1906, I think it should be all right to upload it. Xn4 23:37, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

I think the other designs may be of use too to the "schools project". The copyright I think is 70 years after the authors death. I think you'll be lucky to get a case from an old people home. And if they sold one packet in the USA then the copyright ends in 1923. These are not only free images but they should also be modifiable. I think most image programs could change the "white" to be WHITE and the reddy areas to be red. This article at present is missing a really sharp logo and I think that Old Derbeian has found a solution for you. Well done Victuallers (talk) 14:48, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

I've edited the crest from 1906 and posted it up in place of the the sheild image. I'm trying to gather some evidence about the changes in the crest which I'll post up, if successfull OldDerbeian (talk) 17:55, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
