Derek Swan (born October 24, 1966 in Dublin) was an Irish soccer player during the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s.
"Swanny" as he was known, was an ace goalscorer during his long career. He appeared for Bohemians (2 spells), Port Vale, Shamrock Rovers, Dundalk F.C. and UCD.
He began his career with Home Farm in 1985/86 (making his debut against Shamrock Rovers in November 85) before moving to Bohs in 1986/87 and averaged 10 league goals a year. In June 1987 Derek guested for Shamrock Rovers in a tournament in South Korea [1].
He transferred to Port Vale in 1990. He had an unhappy spell at Vale Park and joined Shamrock Rovers in November 1990. During his 3 years at the club, he scored 25 goals in 75 league appearances and was top club goalscorer in 1991/92 and 1992/93.
In December 1994 he returned to Bohs for a pricely sum of £2,000 and spent the next 6 years at Dalymount before signing for UCD and helping them to avoid relegation. Also scored in European competition [2].
Derek was capped at Youth, Under-21 and Under-23 levels for Ireland and the League of Ireland Representative teams. As of April 2007, he is joint 22nd in the all time list of League of Ireland goalscorers with 118 league strikes.[3]
