Derek Holmes (born 11 October 1978 in Lanark, Scotland) is a Scottish footballer who currently plays for the English Football League Two club Rotherham United.

Holmes' career began in 1995 when a signed for Scottish outfit Hearts. Holmes struggled in his pursuits to get into the first team and impressed with great performances during his loan spells with Cowdenbeath and Raith Rovers. In 1999, Holmes left Hearts and joined Ross County.

Holmes spent two seasons with Ross County, achieving moderate success by consistently getting on the scoresheet. After a brief loan spell with Bournemouth, he joined them on a permanent deal.

Bournemouth were impressed by Holmes and he was consistently in the first team. During his four year spell with Bournemouth, Holmes was occasionally used as a midfielder. In 2005, Holmes made his 100th league appearances for Bournemouth, but it proved to be his last as he joined Carlisle United shortly there after.

Holmes time at Carlisle United was a tough one, he failed to truly win over the supporters, but did score some crucial goals in his two seasons at the club. At the end of the 2006-2007 season, Holmes joined Football League Two side Rotherham United.

Holmes made an immediate impression for his new club by scoring a double against Peterborough United. Holmes was enjoying the best form of his career at the South Yorkshire club and scored the first league hat-trick of his career against Lincoln City FC on the 12th of January, 2008. Rotherham went on to win the match 3-1.
