Derby of the eternal enemies (Greek: Ντέρμπι των αιωνίων αντιπάλων), also called The mother of all battles (Greek: Μητέρα των μαχών), is the name given to football matches between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, teams which are both located in Athens. These two are considered the most successful Greek football clubs and the rivalry between them (and their fans) is extremely intense. Thus, this derby has always been a classic for the Greek capital as well as the whole of Greece.

[edit] Culture rivalry
The rivalry between the two top Greek clubs can be traced back to some social, cultural and regional differences. Panathinaikos comes from the center of Athens and is considered the classic representative of the old high-class Athenian society and culture. On the other hand Olympiacos comes from Piraeus, the port of Athens, representing the world of the working class.
In classical antiquity, Athens and Piraeus were the two principal cities of Attica. Athens was regarded as the cradle of the ancient Greek civilization, taking advantage of Piraeus harbours' strategical potential. They were connected by the Long Walls and were closely related to each other, considered a united region, although they were separate. After the creation of the modern Greek state, Athens was declared the new capital of Greece in 1832 and consequently Piraeus, with its newfound status as port of the capital, evolved from a depopulated at the time area to become an important commercial and industrial center. After the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922) and the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, both cities, especially Piraeus, experienced a demographic explosion, with the arrival of Greek refugees from Asia Minor, something which continued even more rapidly during the following years. This process resulted in the creation of a united Athens-Piraeus urban area, and now Piraeus is not a separate city anymore, but an integral part of the Greek capital.
The cultural differences between "central" Athens and Piraeus have almost faded nowadays, at least to some extent, but in the past the clash between the upper and lower (working) class was much more pronounced. The foundation of Olympiacos in 1925 and the club's successes provided a way for the people of Piraeus to express their contempt for the rich (represented in their minds by Panathinaikos) and vice versa. Furthermore, Olympiacos attracted fans from all over Greece who believed themselves to be victims of social or political unfairness. Nowadays, however, the fanbases of both clubs are almost similar, since Olympiacos and Panathinaikos are supported by all social classes, besides strong economic and political groups.
[edit] Football rivalry
Both clubs contend for the title of not only the most successful football club in Greece, but also the greatest Greek sports club overall. Their football departments have always been the most attractive among their fans, as Olympiacos and Panathinaikos have a long-standing antagonism since they first met in the fields, but the rivalry extends into other sports as well, such as basketball, volleyball and water polo.
The two have the largest fanbases in Greece and who's the most popular is a topic of endless discussion between their fans, although Olympiacos seems to be the one (especially lately). Olympiacos has won 63 official major football trophies to Panathinaikos' 39.AEK Athens is the only team that has sporadically challenged their uncontested domination over Greek football.
