The Derby du Nord (French for Northern Derby) is a football rivalry between RC Lens and Lille OSC, two of northern France's best clubs. The rivalry is axed on social and economic basis, since Lens is known as an old popular, industrial city and Lille as a middle-class, rich, modern and Europe-turned one. Nowadays the matches, which can get pretty heated, have gained more importance as they may determine berths in continental competitions.
