The 2008–09 season will be Derby County's 110th season in the Football League. It is their 41st season in the second division of English football and their first season in the second tier since the 2006-07 season. They were relegated from the Premiership in the 2007/08 season with the lowest points total since the introduction of three points for a win.

As Derby are a Championship club, they will join the FA Cup in the Third Round, which will be drawn in December 2008 following the completion of the 8 previous rounds of the competition (made up of two preliminary rounds, four qualifying rounds and then rounds one and two proper.)

As Derby are a Championship club, they will join the Carling Cup in the first round. This will be drawn on Friday June 13, 2008 at 10 a.m.[42]
